We need to change the conversation about teaching and teachers in order to inspire future generations. At Cleveland Humanities Magnet High School in the Los Angeles Unified School District, a public school in the nation’s second-largest school district, I spoke with a dynamic young history teacher, who looked just a tad older than his students, about his own background. He had gone to the same high school where he was now teaching. I was inspired watching his lessons on civil rights.

“Why did you become a teacher?” I asked.

When he replied, “I always knew I was going to come back,” I felt that I had asked a really dumb question. His frank answer moved me. He’d been so inspired by his own teachers that he wanted to become one of them. That is exactly the kind of teacher I want in my kids’ classrooms.

As parents, we need to work with teachers to help them succeed. They hold our children’s futures in their hands. In Japan, this was part of the unspoken rules of parenting. Mothers bore the greatest burden and responsibility when it came to supporting their children’s education. At times, the demands on Japanese mothers felt surreal, like something out of reality TV.
